At 6 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, South Pier Park Drive closes between Front Beach Road and LC Hilton Jr. Drive. It stays closed until noon on Sunday, November 8. The race it makes room for runs on a single Saturday. The setup around it takes up the rest of the week, and on that Saturday the course reaches inland highways most beach errands never touch.
The tree lighting, the symphony and the Christmas parade all happen within a few blocks of Pier Park, and each one takes an evening. The 2026 Visit Panama City Beach IRONMAN Florida takes a week of one street, a full day of Front Beach Road, and athletes on the road for 17 hours on November 7, according to IRONMAN's 2026 traffic impact sheet. The rest of the month's events fit around it.
The Week Before the Gun
IRONMAN has a contract to keep the full-distance Florida race in Panama City Beach through 2029. The company announced that extension in November 2023, and it fixes the basic layout: a swim at Russell-Fields Pier, a 112-mile ride, and a run on Front Beach Road that finishes at Pier Park.
For 2026, the IRONMAN Florida Athlete Guide, last updated October 8, puts the public IRONMAN Village and athlete check-in at Aaron Bessant Park, 500 West Park Drive. Transition and mandatory bike check-in are in the Pier Park West parking lot at 600 Pier Park Drive. Check-in and village activity at the park run Wednesday, November 4, through Friday, November 6.
From the Sunday closure through Friday, the western edge of Pier Park works more like an event venue than a shopping center. The park is where the village sets up, the west lot is where thousands of bikes get racked, and South Pier Park Drive connects the two.
Saturday, November 7, Road by Road
Race day starts in the Gulf. Pros go off from Russell-Fields Pier at 5:40 a.m. and age-group athletes follow at 5:55 a.m. The swim is 2.4 miles, two laps around the pier.
The full closures are near the venue. Front Beach Road from West Park Drive to Powell Adams Road and West Park Drive from Front Beach Road to Pier Park Drive both close at 2 a.m. Saturday and reopen at 4 a.m. Sunday.
The rest of the course works differently. IRONMAN lists most bike and run roads as delay windows, not full closures. Those are stretches where traffic should expect to slow or wait while athletes come through. The bike course leaves Pier Park on Pier Park Drive and Philip Griffitts Sr. Parkway, which is Highway 79. It loops inland on Highway 388, Highway 77, County Road 2300, Blue Springs Road and Highway 20. It comes back by way of Gayle's Trails, Griffin Boulevard, Ashley Drive, Panama City Beach Parkway, the Camp Helen bike path and Front Beach Road.
Here are the published windows, in order of when they start:
| Window on Nov. 7 | Road segment |
|---|---|
| 6:30 to 11 a.m. | Pier Park Dr to Philip Griffitts Sr. Pkwy; Hwy 79 North to SR 388 |

| 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. | Hwy 79 North, Hwy 20 to the New Hope turnaround |

| 11:55 a.m. to 11 p.m. | Joan Ave, Thomas Dr to Surf Dr |
| 2 to 4 p.m. | Hwy 79 South, New Hope turnaround to Gayle's Trails |
The run windows are the longest of the day. The bike windows on Highway 79 and Panama City Beach Parkway mostly clear by late afternoon. The run course holds Front Beach Road, South Thomas Drive and Thomas Drive from 11 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. It is a two-lap route. It leaves transition through the Breezeway and South Pier Park Drive, turns at West Park Drive, then heads east past Margaritaville Cottages, through the Hutchison Boulevard merge, down the South Thomas Drive trolley lane and along Thomas Drive to the Tootsies property before turning back. That means a Saturday dinner reservation on Thomas Drive falls inside the run window.
IRONMAN's request to the community in the traffic sheet is short:
"We appreciate your support and ask that you proceed with extreme caution and allow for additional travel time to your destination."
On Sunday, November 8, the activity moves back to Aaron Bessant Park for awards and village events, and South Pier Park Drive reopens at noon.
Where the Newer Kitchens Fall on That Map
A few of the town's newest spots sit close to the race-day routes, so it helps to know which roads lead to them.
Big Mama's Coastal Country Cooking opened its Panama City Beach location at 10071 Hutchison Blvd. on August 31, the News Herald reported, with a full bar and game-day TVs alongside its homestyle menu. Hutchison Boulevard is part of the run route through the merge, so on November 7 the route there matters more than usual.
Farther east, Nilly's on Navy took over from what used to be Nilly's Wine Bar. It changed ownership and added a food menu at 7119 US-98 in the Beachwalk Center, according to a July News Herald report. Sweet Brewnette has opened a café on Navy Boulevard with a wine bar and light bites. WJHG reported at the start of October that the wine bar is open Friday and Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. to begin with. IRONMAN's published delay list doesn't name Navy Boulevard or US-98 at Beachwalk Center.
Pier Park is also adding a restaurant. The News Herald documented a Ruby Tuesday under development next to LongHorn Steakhouse near Pier Park Drive and Panama City Beach Parkway.
The Same Blocks, Reset Four More Times
After November 8, Aaron Bessant Park and Front Beach Road go back to hosting events that last an evening or a weekend, with much smaller footprints.
Emerald Coast Cruizin' returns November 12 to 14, according to the organizer. Check the show grounds on the organizer's site before heading out.
Thanksgiving weekend brings Beach Home for the Holidays to Aaron Bessant Park on Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28. Visit Panama City Beach's schedule for Friday:
- 3:30 p.m., campfires, s'mores and Santa Village open at the park
- 5:15 p.m., The Nutcracker by Panama City Ballet on the Park Stage
- 5:55 p.m., tree lighting
- 6 p.m., The Band Perry on the Park Stage
- 7:30 p.m., fireworks at City Pier
On Saturday the village opens again at 3:30 p.m. At 6 p.m. the Panama City Symphony and Panama City Ballet perform scenes from The Nutcracker with music by Leroy Anderson and Johann Strauss, and the evening ends with fireworks.
On December 5, a week later, the Panama City Beach Marathon starts at Pier Park. The organizer says the course is not closed to traffic and sets a 1 p.m. course cutoff. On an open course, drivers share the road with runners through the morning.
The last event in the stretch comes back to Front Beach Road. The Optimist Club of the Beaches Christmas Parade is Saturday, December 12, 2026, starting at 5 p.m. It stages across from Sharky's on Front Beach Road and runs west along Front Beach Road and through Pier Park. Visit Panama City Beach's general holiday guide lists the parade on December 13, but the club's 2026 page gives the 12th.
Put together, these events run along roughly the same mile of road from November 1 to December 12. The race is the only one that closes that road for a full day, and the only one with a closure that starts six days before its own start time.
